Older Adults and Substance Abuse

Presented by Carol D'Agostino, LCSW, BCD, MA,CASAC

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Developing Leadership in Reducing Substance Abuse,               Consultant, Lifespan's Geriatric Additions Program (G.A.P.)

Substance misuse by older adults is a national epidemic.  The most common problem is alcohol abuse and prescription drug mismanagement.  Currently, very few treatment programs nationally have programming that accommodates the complex needs of this population.  The wave of aging Baby Boomers will bring new problems as these adults are now presenting illegal drug problems.  This presentation will provide information and awareness of these issues and how national leaders are responding.  It will also speak to Lifespan's Geriatric Addiction Program, the recipient of a national award from the American Society on Aging for their work in this field.
